Beginner’s Guide to Indoor Gardening

Welcome to my guide on bringing nature indoors. Growing plants in my home makes my living space beautiful, fresh, and alive. You do not need a big yard to start. Let me show you how I manage my indoor garden.

Why I grow plants indoors

It offers great benefits for my name, health, and mind.

cleaner air

My plants clean the air inside my home and give me fresh oxygen.

less stress

Taking care of living plants helps my mind relax and boosts my mood.

beautiful home

Green plants add color to rooms and make empty corners look cozy.

year-round fun

I can grow indoor plants all year, safely away from cold weather.

My favourite plants for beginners

I prefer to choose plants that do not die easily. Here are some plants for a first garden:

spider plant

It grows narrow, arching leaves with bright green stripes. It is very tough and grows baby plants on long stems.

cast iron plant

This plant gets its name because it is as tough as metal. It has wide, dark green leaves. It handles low light and dry air.

zz plant

This plant has shiny leaves that look unique. It can go a very long time without any water.

How I understand light

Plants need light to make food and grow strong. So I put my plants accordingly:

bright direct light

This is bright sun hitting the plant directly. Most of the cactus plants love this spot.

bright indirect light

This is a bright room, but the hot sun does not touch the leaves directly. Most of my houseplants love this spot.

low light

These are darker areas like bathrooms or hallways. My low light plants stay healthy here.

How I water properly

Too much water kills indoor plants by rotting the roots. Here is how I avoid that:

The right way to water

I pour water until it runs out of the holes at the bottom of the pot. I never leave pots sitting in a puddle. I pour the extra water out of the saucer after 15 minutes.

My choice of pots and soil

I always give my plants a good environment to grow healthy roots:

drainage holes

I only use pots with holes at the bottom so extra water escapes.

indoor soil

I never use dirt from my yard because it is too heavy. I always buy bagged indoor potting mix.

Simple tools I use

I just use these simple basics:

  • A small watering can with a long spout.
  • A small shovel to move soil.
  • A basic spray bottle to mist leaves.
  • Sharp scissors to cut away old leaves.
